The title track gained renewed popularity in the late 1990s after being featured in the 1996 British comedy film Trainspotting. Jon Pareles of The New York Times wrote a favorable review, saying the album "in rare moments, hints at a wink behind Ms. Or shall I take the day off and turn down the fire, and just take a moment to send my love to them over the ether? Two of the four tracks had been later released in Del Rey's following studio albums, including " The Next Best American Record" in her sixth major-label studio album Norman Fucking Rockwell! Her lyricism has reached a new level of sophistication, switching from devastatingly plainspoken (”Real love is like feeling no fear/When you’re standing in the face of danger/’Cause you just want it so much”) to the more abstract and sensual.

S 12] The song is speculated to be considered for a compilation of Del Rey and Nowels' favorite Lust for Life outtakes. Still, even for the converted, it’s almost too easy to trip into the endless black holes of Del Rey’s universe, where Hollywood sits at the very center in glamorous ruin.To my ears, at least, it still lacks the vivid immediacy of LUST FOR LIFE, recorded years earlier, near the dawn of movie stereo. Paris Match magazine first revealed that the album would be out on July 21, and on May 24, Del Rey herself confirmed the date on Twitter.

Lust for Life debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 with 107,000 album-equivalent units of which 80,000 were pure album sales, marking Del Rey's second number one on the chart. The album became the biggest commercial success involving Pop up to that point, reaching the top 40 in both the US and the UK charts. The Sales brothers were brought back for the tour, while Canadian guitarist Stacy Heydon, who worked with Bowie on his 1976 Isolar Tour, replaced Gardiner on guitar. That impulse towards a communal understanding of her universe appears most obviously in songs like “God Bless America - And All the Beautiful Women in It” and “When the World Was At War We Kept Dancing,” two pared-down folk ballads with souped-up low ends (the former includes instrumentation by Metro Boomin, with errant gunfire punctuating the chorus). You know, in this town, an artist really needs a lot of space when they’re trying to create something special. Siouxsie and the Banshees recorded a cover of "The Passenger" with brass instruments on their 1987 album Through the Looking Glass. It was his second collaboration with English musician and friend David Bowie after The Idiot, released in March the same year. It’s a record sung from inside the curl of a cresting wave—the feeling of something happening, around you and inside you before you’ve figured out exactly what it means.

Roison O'Connor from The Independent wrote that " Lust for Life is more of an elaboration on her favourite subjects rather than a repetition, in fact, it's her most expansive album to date," concluding that "Del Rey is far more self-aware than she has been on her previous albums". Lust for Life was recorded at Hansa Studio by the Wall in West Berlin from May to June 1977, with production being handled by Bowie, Pop, and engineer Colin Thurston. Lust for Life features recurring trap rhythms, classic rock references, "sepia-toned" orchestral backings, and Del Rey singing with a "hip-hop affectation". The more I did features and got out more, the more I was out of that quiet place and in that far west. It's kind of all about Topanga and this zone I was in for a minute that I got kind of shifted out of.
