Look at the Rocket wood burner DIY heater, been done and clearly works, but do you think you would get insurance to fit one in a UK house? My thought is to make the legs adjustable and the heat exchanger box sized to mesh with the hood shape/taper. I'll arrange some removable flue gas turbulators inside the tubes, and the outside of the inner tank will also have some turbulators that serve to support it as well as mixing flue gas flow. The most important factors for the safe usage of the 6" Magic Heat Reclaimer are proper operation and regular cleaning, Make sure that the inside flue temperature of your stove is above 350 degrees (skin temperatures of 250 degrees), at a settled down, steady burn rate.

Those sloppy mistakes won't fly if I am trying to make, essentially, a perfect weld that is watertight. If I was going to start on some kind of project like this, I think I would start with a used boiler that had tubes and work on the firebox end of it. Again I fastened the core into place with a series of tack welds, trying my best not to burn through the thin metal on the bucket. So the flue draw is the problem, thinking now about two chimneys in parallel, one with the loop on and a draw fan, and one straight.Although, I suppose the weakest link in that might be my one gas saw, that is if we can't get wood delivered.

Thats easy enough - an electric fan on the chimley cowel would consume, im sure, much less energy than the hot gas holds. I have another, older one which I got off my grandmother (she had gotten new ones) and it takes replaceable batteries but it seems to be a little overly sensitive in that smoking a hookah (with really good hookah coals) would set the thing off. My hydronic oil boiler is on the old side and horribly inefficeint, but I can't afford to replace it with a newer condensing one. When I was satisfied with the location of the union, I used a paint marker held tightly to the union to mark the location. I have made a couple of attempts at welding up a firetube heat exchanger, fortunately with junk steel, and have learned mostly how poor my welding skills are.

Old masonry stacks were often laid with "sand-lime" mortar, and over the years, the acid vapors in wood smoke will "eat" or dissolve the lime in the sand-lime mortar, leaving the mortar very thin or even crumbling or gone altogether, leaving "holes" in the stack hidden behind the wood walls in your house. I have yet to purchase some steel to get going on this, but I may draw the whole thing up in Solidworks to see what it may look like before making sparks. As to gunking up the chimney - I am afraid of that and am willing to do the work to clean it routinely.
