Description

Although it is only rarely and obliquely referred to in the book, the symmetry between their suffering seems to be related to the mysterious “long game” played by the faeries. It shows how the mindset is altered, how overwhelming it can be and how hard it is for someone to escape that event.

A child that grows up half-wild in the forest learns the secrets that grow there simply through common sense. While traveling through a small village, Liadan is taken by a pair of men belonging to a notorious band of outlaws. The keep at Sevenwaters is a remote, strange, quiet place, guarded by silent men who slip through the woodlands clothed in grey, and keep their weapons sharp. Still, I continued to teach myself the healer’s art, for my heart told me this would be my true work. Anne McCaffrey"This saga will hold you entranced" Australian Women's WeeklyDaughter of the Forest is a mixture of history and heritage, myth and magic, legend and love.

Lynn : Obviously I’m familiar with this fairytale but I think Marillier is doing an excellent job of fleshing the characters out. Throughout the novel, he is the only one Sorcha can communicate with, as he is the only one who can "speak" to her without having her break her vow. All of us could read, though Conor was by far the most skillful, and there were old manuscripts and scrolls tucked away on an upper floor of the stone fortress that was our home. Daughter of the Forest is, after all, based on a fairy tale, and it satisfies the requirements of fantasy first and foremost.

Everywhere he went, from hall to courtyard, from sleeping quarters to stables, his two great wolfhounds padded silently behind him. While it seemed almost odd that one particularly loathsome villain who had Sorcha at his mercy didn’t subject her to even worse treatment, at the same time, the very way he manipulates events, even making decent people powerless and twisting the lore to his own advantage had a frighteningly real cast to it. If you asked me to define heroism, I’d say it is not courage over fear, or even facing danger, but pure and simple persistence, someone like Frodo from Lord of the Rings, someone who endures for the sake of others. Sorcha has black hair and wide green eyes and bares a strong resemblance to their mother, who died birthing her. A pretty hefty fantasy book set in an old historical setting, the world politics itself can be enough of an undertaking. And yes, like you Lynn, I’m struggling to keep in mind that Sorcha is only 12 years old at the beginning of the story. Sorcha is the first daughter of seven children but unfortunately not the the seventh son her father wanted. Sorcha embodies that kind of heroism exactly, going through constant pain, and indeed partial disfigurement of her hands, as well as a number of other trials, all for the sake of her brothers. Three of my six brothers were there, Conor whistling some old tune; Cormack, who was his twin, creeping up behind to slip a handful of bog weed down his neck. She is directly forbidden use of writing or pictures and must communicate entirely through gestures.
