Though a surfing expedition to the arctic sounded like an idiotic concept even by crazy-Scandinavian standards, this documentary turned out to be high quality.

However, several of them turn out to be more interested in the fact that (according to the film) there was a German U-boat base on the island during the Second World War. The true adventures of the world's greatest stuntman : my life as Indiana Jones, James Bond, Superman and other movie heroes.Turns out there is a shit tonne of Nazi gold on the island and somebody is willing to kill to get to it. The expedition arrives at Bear Island, location of a NATO base and the site of a former U-boat station, and, from his German colleagues Jungbeck and Heyter, they learn that Larsen is missing. It doesn't take us long to discover that on board one of the abandoned U-boats is a the stuff to give "Goldfinger' a wet dream - and someone amongst them is determined to secure it. My sister got into this film years ago as its one she would always sit down with our grandparents to watch and about the only "oldie" she would actually sit still during.

On the remote Norwegian Bear Island, used as a submarine base by the Germans during World War II, U. The classic tale of adventure and death on a mysterious Arctic island, from the acclaimed master of action and suspense. K. which is rather ridiculous considering that this is a made in Canada feature though I’m glad I did as it was fun to check it out after far too many years. The pair would also work together on a couple of Fu Manchu outings, Dark Places and a good old Pirate adventure. MacLean’s first novel garnered him a very large advance (headline news in postwar Britain), but it was a good bet.Amazingly, despite MacLean’s enormous popularity during the 1960s and 1970s, he seems to be a forgotten author today. In 1976 Maclean's second wife Mary formed a company with producer Peter Snell, Aleelle Productions, who aimed to make movies based on MacLean novels including Golden Gate, Bear Island, The Way to Dusty Death and Captain Cook.

American scientist Frank Lansing (Donald Sutherland) has come because his father was a U-boat commander who died there, and as accidents start to decimate the expedition he begins to realise that some of his colleagues are after a shipment of gold aboard the U-boat that his father commanded. An American (Donald Sutherland) and a Norwegian (Vanessa Redgrave) fall prey to an ex-Nazi (Richard Widmark) seeking gold from a U-boat in the Arctic. While lying in wait for his pursuers, Lansing realises that Hartman has given him an unloaded rifle and that he must be the mysterious Zelda. They developed the project for several of months in the mid 1970s but Snell was unable to raise finance. This strikes me as one of those films that I rarely seem to find anything positive written about and to be honest, I can’t figure out why.Donald Sutherland, Vanessa Redgrave, Richard Widmark, Christopher Lee and Lloyd Bridges star in this 1979 British-Canadian thriller based on Alistair MacLean's novel, Bear Island. Avalanches, explosions, falling radio towers and plenty of carnage lie in wait for Donald and Lloyd as they attempt to discover the whereabouts of the gold and just who is behind the insanity of it all.
