They are/were violent and dangerous men; the sheer brutality of their crimes showed this and needed no further embellishment. Na noite de 5 de abril de 1991,durante as férias de Páscoa Julie e Robin Kerry primas da autora e o seu irmão Tom foram vitimas de um ataque violento de onde apenas Tom escapou com vida. Although he was charged with two cases of murder, the prosecutor determined that there wasn't a lot evidence to hold him.

It is interesting reading a personal narrative concerning these topics rather than the usual scholarly roundup of evidence. The two sisters were raped and then murdered by a group of four males, who also attempted to murder the sisters’ cousin, Thomas Cummins. It portrays the profound emotional and psychological turmoil that crime inflicts upon victims and their loved ones. At other points in the book, she withholds evidence of the crime itself, and neglects to inform the reader why the police actually suspected Tom in the first place. He failed a polygraph, which sometimes happens when you haven’t slept or ate for 30 plus hours and you spend the night fighting for your life in the black waters of the treacherous Mississippi. And this, perhaps, is all well and good when it comes to crime fiction – despite its creepy obsession with female victims. Following this turn, there are a series of pleas and trials that result in convictions of the four men on the bridge.

The crime itself is horrendous and heartbreaking, but the staggering injustice Tom Cummins suffered at the hands of the Missouri Police Department was almost more challenging to comprehend than the atrocious crime. Apesar de termos consciência do crime horrendo, todos são caracterizados de modo extremamente parcial.m. It was a school night and that’s way past light’s out for me, but I just couldn’t stop reading it. The author, Jeanine Cummins is a Goodreads author who has recently written another book, although I've not yet read it.
