I was struck by the light that reading this account of Bryony’s alcoholism shone on her other novels; while running the marathon she was looking forward to the bottles of prosecco she would have to celebrate and her drunken hijinks in her twenties were followed by a period of crippling anxiety and regret.

This is I think the darkest of her books as she tackles her alcoholism with brutal honesty including the impact on her family. I have read an number of Gordon's previous books (the wrong knickers, mad girl etc) and what I loved about this book is that it is a reflection of the journey you go through with addiction. It's a story of an addict's struggles and triumphs, and how the wins often look like absolutely ordinary moments. The honesty is so appreciated and I had to keep reading portions aloud to my husband as I knew he would totally relate to Harry. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The inclusion of her internal monologue allows us to understand the nature of her relationship with alcohol.

The admittance that this has often not been the case articulates bravely while we may look one way on the surface, the reality may not be the case. She is the presenter of the Mad World podcast and in 2016 she founded Mental Health Mates, now a global peer support network which encourages people with mental health issues to connect and get out of the house. Accessible and enthralling , Glorious Rock Bottom is one of the most important books I have read in years. One of the lines that I found the most powerful was “So when people ask me why, I tell them that I stopped drinking because I wanted to start living. In 2017 she won the MIND Making A Difference Award for her work in changing the perception of mental health in the media. This very readable book is a crucial reminder that change - of any kind - isn't going to happen with a quick fix but that sometimes it can truly hurt and undo us but that there is a way out of the darkest places.

Perhaps it's early in the recovery process to expect this, and by the point at which recovery is part of the every day and not still a novel choice, the impetus for reflecting more deeply lessens. Can't rate it enough for anyone that is doubting their relationship with alcohol or experiencing its interference and negative effects on a regular basis. Would recommend for anyone wanting to educate themselves on addiction (especially from a female POV), or seeking help with growth and wellness. It also opens an interesting discussion about how as a society we see alcohol and the pressures that come with not drinking.
