This also feels like an anticipation of the pseudoscience of neuro-linguistic programming that emerged in the 1970s, although that was more about patterns of speech than developing an entirely different language. There are some interesting ideas in the narrative around language and the way that the structure of language profoundly influence the way we see and interact with the world but I found myself constantly distracted by elements of the story and its execution that didn’t gel for me. They manifest strongly in Babel-17, where Delany suggests that language might in fact be enough to shape or split someone’s personality, to effectively disembody oneself within one’s body. A late-comer to the worlds of science fiction, John Folk-Williams circled around it, first by blogging (primarily through Storied Mind) about inner struggles and the mind’s way of distorting reality. The first of a remarkable series of vital and stunning masterpieces, a dazzlingly realised star-spanning epic populated with truly mysterious aliens and humans entirely believable yet gorgeously strange.

For a start, one of his characters never speaks the letter ‘p’ which makes reading dialogue a pain in the neck.

This universe has been split between Alliance and Invaders, two human groupings that have divided up several galaxies between them but remain at war. Babel-17 is a standalone science fiction book from the 60’s, although I’m not sure I would have guessed it was from the 60’s if I’d read it without knowing that. But when cryptographers are unable to decode the transmissions, they hand the recordings to a renowned poet, who soon learns that this is no code, but a language unlike any previously encountered .Delany's aunts were Sadie and Bessie Delany; Delany used some of their adventures as the basis for the adventures of his characters Elsie and Corry in the opening novella Atlantis: Model 1924 in his book of largely autobiographical stories Atlantis: Three Tales. He has the conscious minds of dead people serving as ship’s crew, decades before the transhumanists regularly began writing about upload civilizations.
